The Bible clearly states that God intends for us to hear his voice. John 10:27 (KJV) says,"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." Again in John 18:37b (KJV), the Lord tells us that"...Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice." Wouldn't it be wonderful to know that you are hearing God and obeying him in everything you do? That is God's purpose for your life as his child. Every believer has the opportunity to hear the Lord, obey him, and have fellowship and communion with him.
The desire of God's heart is to communicate with you. Proverbs 3:5 and 6 (KJV) gives us the basic instructions for hearing God's voice. "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all they ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." These verses explain how God wants us to walk with him and communicate with him. If you will trust him with all your heart, refuse to lean on your own reasoning and intellect, and acknowledge (ask) him in all your ways, he will direct the paths of your life. God wants to spend time with you in joyful communication, with both of you sharing from your hearts. God longs for fellowship with you and he desires to have constant communication with you, in such a way that you can hear him just as he hears you.
The Bible is filled with numerous Scriptures that reveal the longing of God's heart to have a close, personal relationship with you. Many Christians believe that God is too busy running the universe to have time for them. This is a lie from satan and he has used it to deceive many. Since the Word is filled with examples of God speaking to and having fellowship with his children, are you going to believe what God says or the lies of the devil?
God wants to talk to you. He wants to have fellowship and communion with you because he loves you. 1 John 4:19 (KJV) says, "We love him, because he first loved us." Jesus willingly laid down his life because he loved you so much. It is through the gift of salvation that your sins are forgiven and you are able to come into the presence of God with a pure heart. In his presence, you can talk to him and also hear him speak to you.
John 14:15 (AMP) says, "If you [really] love Me, you will keep (obey) my commands." How are you going to obey God in all your ways (Proverbs 3:6) if you can't hear him talk to you? Obedience is the proof that you love God, so isn't it necessary to hear what God is saying so you don't have to guess at what to do? If you have a problem that requires an answer and God knows what to do, it is truly wonderful to be able to hear him give clear directions that fix the problem! Friendship with Jesus comes from obeying him. (John 15:14) God gives revelation to those who are his friends.
A lot of people can't even comprehend being able to speak to God, much less hearing his voice and getting to know him, but Jeremiah 9:23 and 24 says that you are not to glory in wisdom, might or riches. Instead you are to glory in the fact that you know and understand God. This simple Scripture reveals the opportunity for a walk with God that few Christians have experienced. God intends for you to know and understand him, yet the only way you can do this is to hear his voice and obey what he tells you to do because you love him. The more you listen and obey his voice, the better you will know him.
It is so critical that God's children be able to hear his voice, know what he is saying in their daily lives, and live their lives in his presence. Obviously, he wants us to obey his commands, but how do we know if we are obeying a direction from him or following the carnal desires of our flesh?
